Metrocity Burning
Finally... a movie I worked on came out so I can post something!!! Yes friends, I worked on Mega Mind, and did one whole painting....which for some reason didn't end up in the Art Of book. Thank goodness for the internet, because that's the only place you're ever gonna to see this one.
well then its a big shame you published it so small...I wouldn't mind to see some details in this lovely pic.

ReplyDeleteBut, I mean...if you have a image gallery with a lot of photos with different lights , colors and moods for you to use as reference in each illustration you make :P
It's beautiful. I love the lighting, the glowing clouds and glow beneath the smoke in contrast to the silhouetted buildings near us. There is so much depth. What images did you use as reference for this piece?

ReplyDeleteYes, I do have a very extensive collection of photo reference. Books, magazine clips, personal photos etc. And of course the internet.
Because this painting is of a made up city, no single piece of reference was perfect. I had city reference, cloud reference, color reference, lighting reference, atmosphere reference, mood reference...
The fun is putting it all together.

ReplyDeleteIt's a shame we can't see the work that doesn't come to fruition. You should make your contracts so that you can release them later on for self promotion purposes. :)

ReplyDeleteI became aware of your work through the "Art of Lord of the Rings" books, and looked up your blog from there.
Your work on those films is easily my favorite among all the fantastic conceptual artists. The majestic paintings of the Shire, Barad-dur, Fangorn, etc... all worthy of the source material, which is the best compliment I can give. Can you confirm that you are returning as an art director for the Hobbit? It would be terrible not to see you has the lead conceptual artist on that project.
This Megamind painting is fantastic, as I've come to expect from your work. I see some NYC in the foreground and a doppelganger of Chicago's Sears Tower dominating the skyline... a beautiful, evocative painting.

Your work is too great to not see. :D I've seen your blog before, but also found you in the Dreamworks Moonshine book, and wasn't aware of your tracklist with them. I knew you did work on Surf's Up (Sony), but wasn't aware you had anything for Dreamworks.

ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous, I don’t know why it didn’t make it into the “Art of” book! Are there people on the buildings in the foreground, looking back at their city on fire? Either way, I love the composition of this piece. It's really phenomenal. If you have a larger image, I would absolutely love to see it!
