Surf's Up - post #7
Last post for a while. I'm going to Hawaii for Thanksgiving to visit my cousin who just moved there. She's been trying to convince me to start an animation studio on the Big Island. I must admit, it sounds attractive. Come on, who's with me?!?!

i'm just in awe right now! so much amazing work, i love the wave with the huge clouds above. and how the birds transitioning with the wave's value is friggin awesome! such beautiful design.

All these Surf's Up posts are amazing - thanks for sharing! Surf's Up may have not done well in the box office but critics and animation folk had great things to say about it and a quality film is what matters in the long run! So congrats!

Awesome stuff. I was hoping you would post it! It was one of my fav films of the year. I work at a game company and we all raved about it, story characters, locations, you all did a stellar job.
I comment on Amrand Serrano's blog about it too, on thing I loved is how well the world was put together. The time and dedication you all put into the film really shows. It felt alive, instead of just a bunch of random 'sets'. Excellent work. I can't express that enough.

I remember when we were working on "Lilo & Stitch" there was some article that appeared about the film that made it sound as if the whole studio had been set up in Hawaii to work on the movie (I thin the writer got it confused with the exploratory trip the vis dev team took to the Islands to gather material ... some of them did work there for a couple of months , but the movie was made at Disney's Orlando, FL studio) . We all laughed , but said : "wouldn't it be great if ... "

A couple months ago I was fortunate enough to hear one of the directors speak at the school I attend, and he mentioned that there was some talk of making Chicken Joe's eyes pink >__< haha

So you heard about the "pink eyes" idea. Actually, I have to take credit for that one. In fact, this painting is where the idea came from. If you look at the close-up, you can see that his are are quite pink. The directors loved the idea, but the studio felt it was inappropriate for a kid's film, so they asked me to remove it.
So this is the only place you'll get to see the "real" Chicken Joe!
Frankly, I thought his eyes looked a bit saturated...! That is too funny. I quite liked that idea... and it certainly would not have been out of character for Chicken Joe.
